'One cannot help but be impressed in reading this magnificent book about a magnificent person and his magnificent career. The author has covered just enough detail of the many scientific contributions over Dr. Kolff's nearly 100 years of life. Dr. Kolff's family history and the roles they played in his life are well presented, and in adequate detail to more appreciate some of his thought-to-be idiosyncrasies in his scientific career. The author searched out and reports on the various experiences of Dr. Kolff, including many of his major contributions beginning with the establishment of a blood bank in German-occupied Holland. The author has done a fair and adequate job in identifying and spelling out the various complications faced by Dr. Kolff throughout his illustrious career. It is recommended this book to be on the shelves of all of those people interested in the historical applications of bioengineering techniques and concepts into medicine. The book will be a valuable reference to beginning bioengineering students, as they follow the strife, struggles, and eventual successes of the Father of Artificial Organs.'
